COMMUNITY ACTION!

Spring 2005

Thank You Gordon!

Labour's Sutton Coldfield campaigner Dr. Rob Pocock met Chancellor Gordon Brown on his recent visit and thanked him for giving Britain:

Lib Dem let down
Did YOU vote for the Lib Dems in the elections here last summer?
'Dr Rob' backs Labour's tough new action on anti-social behaviour -
It's more ACTION on crime!

Labour's Rob Pocock has welcomed new government money coming to Sutton Coldfield to combat graffiti, vandalism, antisocial behaviour and binge drinking.
"All too often the lives of honest people are being plagued by the actions of a tiny few.
Labour's new cash for Sutton, coupled with our new crime laws, mean we can at last get tough on the troublemakers" Rob told a recent press briefing.
There's also extra money for more police and new environmental wardens to clean up rubbish and graffiti.
"But calling for more police is not enough" said Rob. "We don't need cheap headlines, we need a proper strategy to invest in community and leisure facilities, environmental clean-ups, more streetlights and a more attractive Sutton Town centre.

Labour is the only Party to provide this all-round investment".

Building Blight - Rob launches new policy to protect Sutton Coldfield
Rob Pocock has launched a new five part plan to stem the tide of building sweeping through Sutton Coldfield.
  1. Tougher controls on the free market in private land development using new powers to limit the right to build.
  2. Set an agreed limit on the total acceptable number of houses in Sutton Coldfield this would be a limit agreed under Regional Planning Guidance in line with the Government's new Housing Plan published last month.
  3. Require developers to reach an acceptable agreement with a local residents' Planning Forum on the size and scale of individual sites.
  4. Require developers to pay a 'Per property' contribution towards public services such as Doctors and Schools, which cannot otherwise cope with the increased housing.
  5. Introduce a support scheme to help older people who want to move to smaller local properties, and not lose their capital. Larger properties would then be available to meet demand.

The Conservatives complain about the housing problem, but their own free market ideology means they oppose tougher public planning controls on developers.
