Council cash for new streetlights is to be doubled for Sutton Coldfield and other Constituencies
in Birmingham under the proposals for next year’s City budget announced last week.
Labour’s Sutton Coldfield campaigner Dr Rob Pocock is already embarking on a consultation of
local residents to find out the roads most in need of improvements.
“Poor streetlighting regularly comes high on the lists of local concerns residents have raised in
our local street surveys in Sutton Coldfield” Dr Pocock claimed this week.
“The extra government support being allocated to Birmingham next year means we are
proposing to double the amount available for local street lighting schemes, with £120,000 available for
Sutton next year.
While this is excellent news, the most important thing now is for local residents to have the first
say on where the new budget should be spent.
Over the next few weeks we’ll be extending our local survey questionnaires and preparing a map of the
‘black spots’ which need brightening up. A lot of people say how better lighting makes them feel
safer going out at night so hopefully this step will be an important contribution to community
safety as well”.
The new proposals were announced by City Council Leader Sir Albert Bore last week.
Anyone with suggestions for roads most in need of better lighting can write to Dr Rob Pocock,
Campaign Centre, 46 Rectory Park Avenue, B75 7BN.
