RADIO JOB FOR ROB!
Sutton Coldfield's labour campaigner Dr Rob Pocock has been appointed as a 'presenter friend' on the Richard Bacon weekend talk show on BBC 5-Live, which is broadcast on weekend evenings from the BBC Pebble Mill studio.
The news and current affairs broadcast is the successor show to the popular 'Late Night Currie' series hosted by former Tory MP Edwina Currie.
Dr Pocock joins a cross-party panel of commentators who will be challenged to air their views on an unscripted series of weekly topical issues. Dr Pocock, whose debut broadcast went out last week, said, "I'm looking forward to getting Sutton Coldfield on the national map and spotlighting the issues that matter to people here.
The first session was a bit of a challenge, it went out live after 10 on Saturday night, which is a time when I would normally be downing a decent pint or enjoying a meal out. The broadcasters deliberately hope to put you on the spot and I certainly found it tough to be on the ball at that hour!
I was teamed up with a Professor in Sport and the first session covered everything from speed cameras, competitive sports in schools, whether athletes can live normal lives, and whether prisoners should be allowed to keep lottery winnings. I know politicians are expected to have an opinion on everything but that's asking a lot! I enjoyed it immensely however, and look forward to holding up the flag for Sutton Coldfield again next time." Presenter-friends appear on the Richard Bacon show on a 6-week rota, and the team reflects a representative balance of political and topical interests. The broadcast is live every Saturday and Sunday evening at 10pm on BBC Radio 5 Live. ENDS Dr Pocock is Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Sutton Coldfield Constituency.
